Kansat killing sparks non-stop hartal-Death toll climbs to four: Road link with Sonamasjid snapped

CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Apr 7: Export and import through Sonamosjid land port came to a halt as angry local residents Friday barricaded Chapainawabganj-Sonamosjid road after Thursday''s violent clash that left four people killed, reports UNB.(News Today)
Road link between Sonamosjid and the rest of the country remained snapped due to the road barricade.
The violent clash erupted as local activists of ruling BNP chased a procession led by Palli Bidyut Sangram Committee at Bakir crossing in Kansat here Thursday.
Power starved people in Kansat brought out the procession and held a meeting to realise their 14-point demand, including smooth power supply in the region.
A pent up mood was prevailing in the frontier upazila following the bloody clash.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi city mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu MP visited the spot and said all the problems of Kansat would be resolved soon.
BSS adds: The number of dead in the Thursday''s clash at Shibganj between members of Palli Bidyut Unayan Sangram Committee and BNP rose to four as the police recovered the body of Masir Ali of Dewan Jaigir in Shibganj municipal area of the district.
Bodies of Masir Ali, Akram Dad Khan and Mahbubul Alam, a Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal leader, were buried. But the police are yet to recover the body of Abdul Jilani.
According to the police of Shibganj thana, preparations for filing a case are going on.
Meanwhile, Chapainawabganj district minister and Rajshahi city mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu exchanged views with the journalists at the district circuit house this afternoon.
Ruling party lawmaker Harunur Rashid, Jamaat leader and ex- MP Latifur Rahman, Chapainawabganj district Ameer of Jamaat Rafiqul Islam, and Jamaat leader and chairman of Chapainawabganj pourasabha Ataur Rahman were present.
The city mayor said the Thursday''s incident was a conspiracy to make the popular government unpopular. He said the Palli Bidyut Unayan Sangram Committee should not have taken such programmes like the procession with sticks, hasuas, ballams, bows, arrows and other weapons, as all the demands of the committee were fulfilled.
He mentioned that he requested Rabbani not to use sticks and other weapons in the procession, but he (Rabbani) marched seven kilometers towards Shibgnaj with his men equipped with arms to hit BNP men.
Terming it an unlawful, Minu said a proper action would be taken against the offenders of the Thursday''s incident under the existing laws of the land.
He pointed out that after the incident of January 23, all REB officials, DC, SP, UNO and OC were withdrawn to restore peace in the area.
On the other hand, the Sangram Committee called a hartal in Shibganj for an indefinite period.
Earlier, Two people were killed and over 50 injured in a violent clash between local BNP activists and Palli Bidyut Sangram Committee supporters at Kansat in Shibganj upazila on Thursday, three months after police firing left nine power-starved people dead over there.
Witnesses said the violent clash erupted at Bakir crossing about 5pm when local BNP activists chased a procession of thousands of people drumming up their 14-point demand, including smooth power supply in the region.
“Both the groups later attacked each other with bombs, sticks and other sharp weapons, virtually turning Kansat, Selimabad, Shibganj Bazar and Bakir crossing areas into a battlefield,” says a spot account of the violence.
Akram Dad Khan, 43, of Selimabad and Mahbul, 45, of Loyalabhanga were killed during the rioting.
“It looked like an Armageddon as over 100 bombs blew off from both sides during the widespread clash,” said the spot report.
Many of the injured were taken to different hospitals and clinics for treatment. Of them, Bhulu, Saiyed, Kurban, Bhasani, Bulu, Amirul, Hazrat, Monirul, Serajul, Mosharraf and Babu were admitted to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex.
Traffic on Chapainawabganj-Sonamosjid road leading to the land-port came to a halt as the violence erupted.
