DU students call off movement

Tuesday January 18 2005 10:42:51 AM BDT

Students of Dhaka University on Monday called off their movement following assurance from the Vice-Chancellor and top officials of Dhaka Metropolitan Police to take action against the policemen who teased a female student of the university on Sunday.

After a series of dialogues, with the agitated students at the Vice-Chancellor’s residence, the authorities in the afternoon said the police administration had agreed to close the constables and the they would seek unconditional apology. Earlier, the students staged a rally at the foot of Aperajeyo Bangla and brought out a procession on the campus on Monday. Following the procession the students staged a sit in demonstration in front of the is VC office for about two hours to press home their demand to bring three policemen to book for harassing a female student.

Vice Chancellor AMA Fayez came to the spot and sat in a meeting with the policemen. The VC later assured the students that police had agreed to apologise informally, but did not mention when and where.

The student withdrew the siege agreeing to a proposal of the vice-chancellor to sit for a negotiation at his office. The authorities agreed to meet the demands of suspension of the policemen and seeking of unconditional apology.
Problems arose again over the way the cops would seek apology. The students demanded it be held in public place, but the authorities said it be held in closed-door.

After a day long dialogue with the university authorities the students agreed to withdraw their movement temporarily. The students also vowed to re-start the movement gain if the police men were not punished.

Meanwhile, the police were removed temporarily from the university area during the agitation. No police personnel was seen at the Arts Building area on Monday.

‘The police are deployed to ensure security of the students, but they are harassing the girls instead of any help,’ an agitated Simi, a third year student of the theatre department and resident of Begum Fajilatunnesa Mujib Hall said reacting sharply over the incident.
