5 robbers held after gunfight

Wednesday July 28 2004 10:22:25 AM BDT

A patrol team of Motijheel police on Monday chased down a bus from the capital's Shantinagar area and held five alleged robbers after a gunfight with them in Mohammadpur area.

The police team nabbed Sohel, Monir, Raju, Nurul Islam and Sohel Rana with five knives following a brief firefight and a 40-minute hunt for the robbers on a Gabtoli-bound bus, police said.

The team started trailing the bus at around 11:30pm, hearing passengers' cry for help. The bus sped through different city thoroughfares and law enforcers sought support from Tejgaon and Mohammadpur police over their wireless sets to stop the vehicle, sources said.

Mohammadpur police put a barricade near College Gate and held the five people after a shootout with the gang. However, three other robbers dodged arrest, they added.

A mob beat the robbers soon after their arrest, leaving Sohel and Monir wounded. Both of them were undergoing treatment at Pongu hospital, police said.

According to police, the bus started from Jatrabari at 11:00pm with 15 passengers. As the vehicle reached Bangla Motor crossing, the driver turned it towards Moghbazar and eight robbers sitting in guise of passengers pulled out knives and started snatching valuables from the passengers.

Police also seized three looted wristwatches from them.

Bus passenger Amjad Hossain lodged a case with Motijheel Police Station.
