Five robbers held at College Gate

Wednesday July 28 2004 10:17:50 AM BDT

The police arrested five suspected robbers and seized five daggers and some looted items, from a bus near the College Gate on the Mirpur Road in Dhaka Monday night.

Three of the arrested — Raju, Nurul Islam and Sohel Rana — were placed on a five-day remand.

Two others — Sohel and Monir Hossain who were injured in police firing — were undergoing treatment at Orthopaedic Hospital in police custody.

The police and witnesses said a group of robbers got on a Gabtali-bound bus from Hatkhola at about 11:30pm and robbed the passengers of valuables and cash.

As the passengers drew the attention of a patrol police team to the incident at Kakrail, they chased the bus up to the College Gate and stopped the vehicle by barricading the road.

Seeing the policemen, the robbers fired shots and tried to get away. The police fired back, injuring two of the robbers.
