90 flood centres open at Sabujbag-Motijheel

Wednesday July 28 2004 01:32:41 AM BDT

More than 100,000 people took shelter in 90 flood centres opened at Sabujbag-Motijheel area under the direct supervision of the local Member of Parliament (MP), reports BSS.

The flood that has entered the dwelling houses and submerged the city’s eastern part under knee to waist deep filthy water has already marooned at least 12 lakh people of the area.

A BSS corespondent while visiting the area today found most dwelling houses and shop under knee to waist deep water and boat replaced rickshwas and vehicles for the residents of Basaboo- Kadamtala-Madartek-Rajarbag residential area.

Even the ground floors of a number of multi-storied shelter centers are now under knee deep water. Each shelter centre now accommodates more than 1000 flood victims.

Housing and Works Minister and local MP Mirza Abbas on Tuesday distributed cooked food, relief materials and medicines among the flood hit people sheltered at Kamalapur High School and College, Ahmadbag High School and College, Kadamtala East Basaboo High School and College and Rajarbag Avoybinodini High School.

Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited today started its four-day programme of distributing cooked food among the flood victims in the Kamalapur High School shelter centre.

Mirza Abbas inaugurated the programme and called upon the affluent section of the people, banks and other financial institutions to come up with their helping hands for the greater humanitarian service to the distressed people.

He also asked the voluntary organizations and donors willing to distribute relief goods in Sabujbag-Motijheel area to keep in touch with him to avoid repetition. The telephone numbers of his Shahjahanpur office are 8311774 and 9357000.

Assuring the flood hit people of the best possible help and assistance, Mirza Abbas said, “Inshallah, none will be left without food, shelter and medicine. Anybody or family not getting help in this hour of need can contact me personally at my Shahjahanpur Office.”

Twelve teams of doctors of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) are active with emergency medical service to the flood-hit people. Thirty five boats are engaged in carrying pure drinking water in big tanks to the marooned people.

Talking to BSS, Mirza Abbas strongly felt the necessity of constructing an embankment on the city’s eastern side to protect the huge population of this vast area including the Motijheel Commercial district.
