Major rivers in S’ganj drying up
Tuesday June 21 2005 11:10:25 AM BDT
SIRAJGANJ: Major rivers of Sirajganj are drying up gradually, leaving an adverse effect on the total environment of the district.
A change of climate is being noticed throughout the district. A drought-like situation is prevailing in the region leading to scarcity of drinking water as the ground water level has receded which may cause landslides in the area in near future, sources said.
Besides, over two thousand ponds are lying idle. Now these ponds are full of water hyacinths and turning into ideal breeding centres for mosquitoes, where a huge quantity of fish could be easily produced.
On the other hand, more than six hundred canals are going without any dredging for long. So, after a slight rainfall these canals overflow their banks causing extensive damage to crops and houses.
So, immediate dredging of all the rivers and canals, and proper management of the ponds in all the nine upazilas of Sirajganj district are urgently needed to solve all these problems.
