CityCell Zimbabwe Tour of Bangladesh 2004-05-Rafique will miss first one-dayer

Monday January 17 2005 09:27:54 AM BDT

Ace left-arm spinner Moha-mmad Rafique is destined to miss the first couple of games if not the entire five-match one-day series against Zimbabwe. The country's highest wicket-taker in both forms of the game has been carrying a hamstring injury since the first Test in Chittagong and so the selectors might decide not to risk Rafique when they today
announce the squad for the first ODI in Dhaka on January 20.

The champion tweaker and a very useful lower-order bat took painkillers to play in the ongoing second Test at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. He hit a gutsy 56 in Bangladesh's unimpressive first innings total of 211 and also defied the pain barrier to bowl 18 overs on the third day yesterday.

But the selectors don't want him to further aggravate the hamstring, as he is a key member of the national team. Chief selector Faruque Ahmed, who will surely name the squad on a match-by-match basis, however will be hoping that the four-day Eid break before the second match in Chittagong will allow the 35-year-old some time to recover.
Also missing will be young spinner Enamul Haque, who has taken 14 wickets in the Test series so far, selectors intend to use him only in Test matches.

In absence of Rafique and Enamul, left-arm spinner Manzarul Islam, who is already in the Test squad, will have to lead a weak spin attack. The selectors might recall fellow left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, who has been out of action since being reported for a suspect action on debut in the Asia Cup last year.
Apart from Razzak, one-day specialist all-rounder Khaled Mahmud and pace bowler Nazmul Hossain are the other players likely to join the remaining 11 players of the Test squad.
