Tuesday January 18 2005 12:47:01 PM BDT

Police authorities yesterday closed three policemen for assaulting a female student on the Dhaka University campus.

Deputy Commissioner (South) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Khan Sayeed Hossain in a meeting with vice chancellor, other university high officials and the students assured them of taking departmental action against the three policemen and regretted the incident.

Students of Music and Dramatics Department demonstrated in front of Aparajeyo Bangla demanding suspension of the three policemen, apology from them and withdrawal of police from the campus.

Bangladesh Chhatra Leage and Bangladesh Chhatra Front yesterday brought out a procession on the campus supporting the demands of the students.

Students' meetings with Vice Chancellor SMA Faiz at his office could not reach any agreement till 4:00pm.

The VC, however, told reporters that the authorities settled the matter through meetings with the students and police.

Meanwhlie, some students aggrieved at the news item published on a few dailies, yesterday assaulted eight journalists including two photographers in front of VC's office.

VC SMA Faiz assured the journalists of taking actions against the attackers.

Three policemen -- Shohag, Muktadir and Majid who were on duty on the campus Sunday roared with laughter at a female student when a mentally disturbed man pulled her scarf.

The three assaulted her and a male student of the same department when they protested.
