Capital market gains strength as shares rebound

Tuesday January 18 2005 12:42:59 PM BDT

The capital market on Sunday gained its strength as shares rebounded at both Dhaka and Chittagong Stock Exchanges on the growing demand from buyers, reports BSS.

The shares opened higher and maintained their upward trends taking majority issues on the gainers’ list, as investors, who are looking for short-term profits ahead of Eid, poured more funds to the day’s business, market sources said.

As a result, the market saw increased business transactions at higher turnover in values. Shares of profiteering, especially cheaper issues made huge trades, which led to rise in the market capitalisation at the DSE and the CSE as well.

The benchmark share price index for both blue chips and ordinary issues rose at both the bourses.

The DSE-20 index for the blue chips Sunday gained 7.21 points to 1,912.35 from the previous day’s 1,905.14. The DSE all share price index went up by 11.79 points to finish at 1,767.61 from on Sunday’s 1,755.82.

A total of 19,97,918 shares of 162 companies worth Taka 188.18 million changed hands on the DSE floor compared to the previous day’s 19,44,081 shares of 156 companies worth Taka 183.59 million. Of the issues traded, 98 recorded gains, 39 incurred losses and 25 remained unchanged.

The total market capitalisation at the DSE moved higher to Taka 199.78 billion from yesterday’s Taka 198.45 billion.

The CSE-30 index for blue chip issues Sunday gained 7.11 points to 3,050.97 from yesterday’s 3,043.86. The CSE all share price index rose by 18.93 points to close at 3,254.72 from the previous day’s 3,235.79.

A total of 5,64,986 shares of 55 companies worth Taka 37.91 million were traded on the CSE floor compared to the previous day’s 5,58,049 shares of 65 issues worth Taka 32.75 million. Of the issues traded, 33 finished in gains, 18 lost and 4 remained unchanged. The market capitalisation on the CSE rose to Taka 194.92 billion from Sunday’s Taka 193.95 billion.
