Tuesday January 18 2005 10:45:59 AM BDT
The prices of essential commodities have shown an uprising trend in the market ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Azha.
Prices of soyabean oil, sugar, ginger and other important items as well as different kinds of spices needed for the Eid festival registered a rise in the market, although these items are abundantly available in the market.
This correspondent while visiting different city markets including Shantinagar, Malibagh and Rampura on Monday found that the prices of various brands of soyabean oil were selling at increased prices. A five-liter can of Teer brand of soyabean oil was selling at Taka 260 while the same of Rupchanda brand at Taka 265.
When asked, the shopkeepers told this correspondent that they have bought these from the wholesale market at an increased price, although these brands were selling at Taka 250 to Taka 255 and Taka 255 to Taka 260 respectively about a fortnight before.
The price of sugar has abruptly increased by Taka 2 per kg and it was selling at Taka 34 per kg. Even it was selling at Taka 32 per kg last week. Retailers said that the importers of sugar charged higher rate on the item.
Ginger, an important item used in cooking meat, was selling at Taka 80 per kg on Monday, which was Taka 70 per kg last week.
Retail sellers said that the increase in the prices would further continue during the Eid festival. Trading circle alleged that a syndicate in the wholesale market is controlling the prices of essential commodities with the blessing of certain quarters. This syndicate seldom cares for the sufferings of the consumers.
It can be recalled that the prices of rice in the market registered a rise recently despite introduction of open market sale (OMS). However, it did not yield any fruitful result in the market.
Coarse rice in the market was selling on Monday at Taka 18 per kg while one kg of fine variety of Najir Shail was Taka 21 to 22, Miniket Taka 23 to Taka 24 and Kataribhog Taka 30 at different markets of the city.
