Flood water to inundate more areas in city

Wednesday July 14 2004 10:48:40 AM BDT

Flood situation in the country's northeast region remained unchanged but aggravated in Jamalpur, Sherpur, Kurigram, Sirajganj, Bogra and Joypurhat districts inundating fresh areas Tuesday, report agencies.

Flood Information Centre sources said the low-lying areas in and around Dhaka and Narayanganj are on the threshold of flood and are likely to be inundated because of sharp rise of the Buriganga at Dhaka, the Shitalakhya at Narayanganj and the Turag at Mirpur.

During the dry season Bangladesh is receiving only half the amount of the Ganges water which it used to receive prior to the construction of the Farakka Barrage by India.
Water Resources Minister Hafiz Uddin Ahmed told this while he was speaking at the Third South Asia Water Forum (SAWAF-III) General Assembly at a city hotel Tuesday .

Besides, flows in various rivers inside Bangladesh were drastically reduced after India's decision of unilateral withdrawal of waters from a number of transboundary rivers, he added.

The Buriganga recorded a rise by 15 cm at Dhaka and the Shitalakhya by 15 cm at Narayanganj. The Turag also recorded a rise by 15 cm at Mirpur and the Tongi Khal registered by 5 cm at Tongi.

In Sylhet, diarrhoea has broken out in eight relief camps in the town and 200 people were inflicted by the disease.

Six people drowned at Chhatak, Jagannathpur and Dharmapasha raising the death toll to 23 in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts.

Four people drowned in floodwater in Jamalpur and Sirajganj.

Flood situation in the Jamalpur district aggravated. About 60,000 people in Islampur and Deoyanganj upazilas were marooned.

River Jamuna was flowing 67cm above the danger mark. Rail communication between Dewanganj and Bahadurabad ghat disrupted as the track went under knee-deep water.

Two persons, Bakka Mondol, 40, of Fazilpur village and Kashi Mondol, 45, drowned in flood water Tuesday. Traffic movement on Madarganj-Jamalpur highway was disrupted.

In Sirajganj, housewife Achhiar, 32, and her minor child were washed away at Shuvogachha village of Kazipur where a flood protection embankment gave way to strong current.

Vast areas in Kazipur, Chouhali, Belkuchi, Shahjadpur and Sadar upazilas went under floodwater aggravating the situation. Officials said one hundred metres of Gopalpur flood protection embankment was washed away by the flood water. River Jamuna was flowing 85cm above the danger mark.

In Sherpur, 45 unions were flooded by onrush of waters from hilly areas across the border. Road communications between Jamalpur, Dhaka, Tangail and northern districts was cut off.

In Kurigram, the situation deteriorated with fresh areas going under water.
A large part of Charbaraibari embankment was washed away by gushing waters of river Dharala. About two lakh people in 65 unions were affected by the flooding.

In Bogra, about one lakh people of Sonatala, Sarikandi, Dhunat and Sherpur upazilas were badly affected.

Jamuna river was inflated and flowing 66cm above the danger mark at Aricha. Water overflowed the banks and submerged fresh areas in Manikganj.
