6 killed, 27 lakh (27,00,000) marooned
Flood situation deteriorates further in Syhet divn

Six people were killed and more than 27 lakh people marooned as flood situation in Sylhet division worsened further on Saturday due to onrush of hilly water from the upstream Indian states and incessant rain in last six days.
Due to serious deterioration of flood situation, six people were killed in Chhatak upazila. Some 26 upazilas of Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj districts have been inundated by flood water following incessant rain during last one week and onrush of upstream water from India.
Worsening flood situation not only damaged thousands of hectares of agricultural land but snapped road communication among upazilas.
While more than five thousand houses in seven unions of two upazilas of Nilphamari district were submerged due to incessant rainfall coupled with upstream water flow continuing for last one week.
More than 200 educational institutions of the three districts of the Sylhet division remained closed as all of those structures went under flood water.
The road communication with Sylhet remained snapped from Chhatak, Doarbazar and Companiganj for last four days. Direct road link between Zakiganj and Beanibazar may snap any time as the on rushing water started to roll down over the Sylhet - Zakiganj highway.
Our Moulvibazar Correspondent reports: Flood situation prevailing during the last 5 to 6 days in greater Sylhet region seriously deteriorated further on Saturday.
Approximately over 5 lakh people at over a dozen of upazilas under the division have in the meantime been affected with the ongoing flooding that has occurred due to onrush of hilly waters.
The flood situation at Goainghat, Companiganj, Kanaighat, Jakiganj, Jaintapur and Sadar Upazilas of Sylhet district and Jahirpur, Biswamborpur, Dharmapasha, Jamalganj, Duarabazar, Chhatak and Sadar upazilas of Sunamganj district deteriorated further.
Different upazila-towns including Companiganj, Goainghat, Chhatak, Sunamganj Sadar in the meantime went under flood waters, while direct road communication from Chhatak and Companiganj to Sylhet and from Sari and Salutikor to Goainghat has also been cut off in the meantime.
Meanwhile, 25,000 labourers in store-collection from queries in Sunamganj and Sylhet districts have been out of employment during the last 5 to 6 days owing with miseries.
The waters of the rivers of Surma, Kushiara, Manu, Khoai, Dhalai, Dauki, Fiyain, are also learnt to have been flowing over danger level.
All 8 unions of Goainghat upazila have gone under flood water, creating a severe crisis of pure drinking water and cattle foods. All educational institutions have also been declared closed.
Some one lakh people of Jaintapur, Kanaighat and Jakiganj upazilas have been marooned.
Meanwhile all the 13 unions and the municipality area at Chhatak Upazila under Sunamganj district have also gone under flood-water marooning approximately 2 lakh people link between Sylhet-Sunamganj was also cut off as the Gobindaganj area and Chhatak upazila went under flood water.
Our Sylhet Correspondent adds: The day-long torrential rainfall and the on-rush of hilly water Meghalaya worsened flood situation in Sylhet district and entire Sylhet Division. At least 20 lakh people including 15 lakh of Sylhet district along were affected owing to the second phase flood in greater Sylhet during this ongoing monsoon. Six killed in Chhatak owing to flood.
The road communication with Sylhet remained snapped from Chhatak, Duarabazar and Companiganj for the last four dams.
At least one lakh people who have been marooned need salvage. But no such effort has been taken up today. About two lakh acres of aus-IRRI and aman seed beds with tender seedlings have been submerged.
The Surma, the Piyain, the Dhalai, the Chela and the Gowain rivers are in spate and have been flowing much above danger levels. Rail link between Sylhet and Chahatak remained snapped since yesterday noon as the Chhatak platform has been inundated waist deep water.
At least 200 educational institutions remained closed while juma prayer could no be held in at least 100 mosques in the flood hit areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj district have been affected.
Our Sunamganj Correspondent adds: The over all flood situation in Sunamganj was deteriorated on Saturday. The Surma is flowing 120cm above the danger level at Sunamganj point. About 7 lakh people of Chhatak, Duara Bazar, Biswamberpur, Jamalganj, Joyantapur, Derai and Tahirpur Upazilas have been marooned.
