By-elections if AL seats fall vacant: Bhuiyan

Monday May 03 2004 01:21:39 AM BDT

BNP secretary general and LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan Saturday said the BNP would go into the next election only after completing the tenure of the government, reports UNB.

“BNP won’t resign even a day before completing the tenure of the government,” he said, addressing a workers rally at Paltan Maidan in the afternoon.

Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal organised the rally marking its Silver Jubilee and in observance of the May Day.

Bhuiyan again asked the Awami League to apologise to the people for setting the April 30 deadline for the fall of the government and to join Parliament. “If your seats fall vacant for not joining parliament, we will then fill up those seats through by-election,” he said.

Referring to the three-point demand of Awami League, the BNP leader said: “We urged them to join parliament to discuss their three-point, but they didn’t join.”

“What is their one-point demand?” he asked. “Is it that the government will have to resign? Why shall we resign at the dictate of those who suffered defeat in the general election two years ago?” he said.

The rally, chaired by Sramik Dal president Nazrul Islam Khan, was also addressed by Law Minister Moudud Ahmed, senior BNP leader KM Obaidur Rahman MP, State Minister for Labour and Employment Amanullah Aman, Nasir Uddin Ahmed Pinto MP and Sramik Dal general secretary M Jafrul Hasan.

The BNP secretary general said the opposition lawmakers “spoke a lot more than us in Parliament” but say they were not allowed to speak in the House.

Addressing the rally, Moudud Ahmed said: “Awami League had no public support in the past… again it was proved public support for them is zero.”

He alleged that Awami League was engaged in a deep conspiracy for destroying the country’s economy and tried to hoodwink the people in the name of April 30 deadline.
The Law Minister called upon the Awami League to join parliament and “shun the politics of destruction and anarchy.”

The rally was followed by a colourful procession, which paraded different city streets, led by BNP senior joint secretary general Tarique Rahman.
